ARREST & INCIDENT

As a follow up and response to the concerning incident this morning involving the arrest of a near a bus transit station, please see the update below. As always, we encourage parents to help students understand how to be aware of their surroundings, not engage with strangers and immediately tell adults about strange or threatening incidents. We appreciate the immediate action and support from Vacaville PD, and are glad that the suspect was identified.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN POSTED BY THE VACAVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Two teenaged girls are to be commended for their quick thinking and actions yesterday, which have now led to the arrest of 29-year-old Vacaville resident Newton Payeah.

Yesterday morning while waiting for a bus at the Vacaville Transit Center on E. Monte Vista Avenue, Payeah approached two girls who were waiting for a bus to take them to school. He asked them if they would like to smoke marijuana with him and offered to give them a ride, identifying himself as an Uber driver. These brave young ladies did the right thing by not engaging him further and got on their bus when it arrived. They then reported what happened to an adult which resulted in police being called.

Our children's safety is extremely important to us and we immediately launched an investigation as to what occurred. Information was being shared on other social media platforms that in some situations was not correct. We want you to know we are committed to providing you information that is timely, accurate, and direct from the source on our social media platforms and sometimes that takes a little longer than we all may want, however this ensures accuracy in what's shared. Officers from our Youth Services Section were actively following up on the case when we learned Payeah returned to the transit center this morning. Officers immediately responded and safely took Payeah into custody. We were able to determine he does not work for Uber as a driver. Payeah was arrested for annoying a child under the age of 18 and booked into Solano County Jail. Below is a picture of Payeah at the time of his arrest and the car he arrived in.

This situation could have ended much different if not for the excellent decisions made by the girls. Please use this event to have those important conversations with your children about how to handle themselves should they ever be in similar circumstances.

Anyone with information regarding Payeah's actions is asked to contact Officer Erwin Ramirez at (707) 449-5200. Media inquiries can be directed to Lt. Mark Donaldson at (707) 449-5260.

Thanks Mr. Jackson!

Teacher standing next to whiteboard
Matt Jackson teaches Integrated Math 1, Business Math, and Mass Media at Country High School. He is a bucket of positive energy getting his students excited and engaged in the world of Math. He helps students who have typically been frustrated with math develop a growth mindset where they can think about things in a different way. Not only does he work hard to develop engaging math lessons with real world applications but he has also taken on a new class, Mass Media. On top of all his hard work at CHS, he also teaches math courses at Kimmie Charter School for Independent Learners. To say that he is a busy man is an understatement but you would never know by the positive presence he puts out on a daily basis. Thanks for all you do for VUSD students Matt!

Schools Closed Thursday and Friday

ALL VUSD SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED THURSDAY, OCT. 12th and FRIDAY OCT. 13th.

Hello VUSD Families,

We hope this message finds your families safe and well. Our hearts go out to those who have been evacuated or have lost loved ones, pets and homes in this tragedy. Thank you for your support as we work through the challenges of this disaster.

Because the evacuation areas in Solano County have increased, affecting even more VUSD families and staff and the air quality is now at hazardous levels, all VUSD schools and offices will be closed on Thursday October 12th and Friday October 13th. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this emergency. Take care and stay safe.

School is Open Oct. 11th

School will be in session today.

VUSD schools will be open today with measures being taken to reduce smoke exposure for staff and students. Students who stay home with parental permission due to poor air quality will have excused absences.

“Our thoughts go out to our Fairfield/Napa/Sonoma neighbors and staff who are dealing with evacuations and tragedy. We understand that many VUSD parents cannot get time off for poor air quality and cancelling school creates childcare and income challenges for many. Keeping schools open, but excusing absences for those who choose to keep students home is the best way we can support our families during this tragedy while maintaining educational continuity.” VUSD Superintendent Jane Shamieh.

All VUSD schools will be collecting donations for fire victims today.

VUSD will follow data and guidelines from the Spare the Air Current Conditions table and the Air Quality Index. The following are measures that VUSD staff will take to ensure minimal exposure to unhealthy air.

See more information about measures we will take to minimize smoke exposure for staff and students.

School Start Times for 2018-19

Hello VUSD Families,

As you probably remember, VUSD has been evaluating our school start times with the intent to create optimal learning environments for our students. Significant research shows that the circadian rhythm (or sleep cycle) for humans changes during the adolescent years. While young children typically are naturally wide awake early in the morning, teens biologically struggle with waking early, regardless of the time they go to sleep. Research shows that aligning school start times to better fit students' biological rhythms results in improved student performance and success.

VUSD has been evaluating school start times for over two years. This evaluation included:

  • reviewing extensive research
  • recommendations from health organizations like the National Sleep Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • school district transportation
  • cost analysis
  • feedback from principals
  • polls for students, parents and teachers

The VUSD Board of Trustees have taken all of these into careful consideration and have voted to adjust school start times for the 2018-19 school year. In the year to come, we will work with VUSD staff, City Coach, athletics, Vacaville Police and Fire and other community organizations in preparation of these new times. We understand that this positive change for student learning requires some adjustments for our families and community partners. We appreciate your willingness to work with us in fitting our educational system to meet students' needs.

More information about school schedules for 2018-19, research, articles, legislation, health tips and news on later school start time can been found here.

Hola VUSD Familias,

THE ECLIPSE IS COMING!

August 21 Eclipse Resources!

On August 21 all of America will experience a solar eclipse. Some areas will witness a total eclipse (when the moon entirely covers the sun); other regions will witness a partial eclipse.

The Bay Area will experience a 76% eclipse, with the moon beginning to cover the sun at 9:01 am, reaching maximum coverage at 10:15 am, and then moving away from the sun at 11:37 am.

Some schools have made plans for students to go outside and watch the eclipse using special solar eclipse glasses and/or cards for pinhole viewing. Please check your school's website to see what kinds of activities are planned.

If you want to send your child to school with glasses for viewing the eclipse, please be sure to provide designated solar eclipse glasses. Staring at even a sliver of the sun without adequate protection can cause permanent eye damage. (You can find more information about choosing safe glasses on the American Astronomical Society's website.)

The following websites have lots of layperson-friendly eclipse information to share with your families and friends:

Warning About "Blue Whale Challenge"

KCRA 3 news reportCBS 13 news story
Dear Parents,

We can never be too careful when it comes to protecting our children.  A dangerous “game” surfaced on social media a while back, particularly with students in other countries. The game is being talked about by student in our schools.

The “Blue Whale Challenge” app involves the enticement of students into risky behavior that could result in the final challenge of taking one’s life. While we do not know of any VUSD students who are playing it, we want to make sure that you are aware of it.

Evidently, it has been removed from the app store.  We are appreciative of members of the community who brought this to our attention; our children benefit when we work together to protect them.

Sincerely,

Kim Forrest

Papa Roach Dedication at Imagine That! May 3rd

Papa Roach
Papa Roach -- a world-touring, Grammy-nominated, triple-platinum rock band with members who originally hail from Vacaville – will break away from their album promotion schedule on May 3 to come home to deliver a message to Solano County children: Be fearless, dream big, aim high to develop your full creative potential.

Members of the band will return to their hometown for a special dedication ceremony at Imagine That!  – Vacaville’s newly opened hands-on learning Exploratorium for children of all ages and abilities. Exhibits at the center encourage children to be free to imagine, create, and welcome sciences and art into their lives.

The highlight of this special ceremony will be Vacaville Mayor Len Augustine proclaiming May 3 as Papa Roach Day in Vacaville. In honor of Papa Roach’s generous support of our community, organizers have created a special exhibit at the center that celebrates their musical success. One portion of the exhibit invites youngsters to play out their rock dreams and musical talents.

Papa Roach formed in 1993, with Jacoby Shaddix, a student at Vacaville High, and Jerry Horton of Vanden High, since that time and with Members Tobin Esperance and Tony Palermo, Papa Roach have achieved critical and commercial acclaim selling over 25 million albums worldwide.

The dedication will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at Vacaville’s Imagine That!, 848-B Alamo Drive.

For local information, contact Lauren Runow of Imagine That!, (707) 474-5317.

Remember these guidelines for protection from the flu:

Wash your hands often with soap and water.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and rub your hands together until dry.

Cover your coughs and sneezes.  Use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze and always throw the used tissue in the trash.  Remember to wash your hands after you cough or sneeze.  You can also cover your cough and sneezes with your sleeves if you do not have a tissue available.

Stay home when you are ill to avoid spreading the virus to other people.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone six months of age or older.

Class for Parents: What Parents Should Know About Devices and Social Media

social-media-collage.jpg

Social Media class for parents: Wednesday, June 1st, 6:30 PM at Educational Services Center, 401 Nut Tree Rd. Vacaville in the Board room.

VUSD and the Vacaville Police Department are hosting a free class to help parents learn about current trends, aps, devices capabilities and dangers that face our kids.

RECENT  NEWS: A New York state man was arrested by federal authorities following an investigation by Vacaville police that included a then 12-year-old victim in Vacaville. Homeland Security agents arrested Robert J. Garneau, 21, of Warwick, New York on charges of online child exploitation.

As social media trends change day to day and technology advancements do the same, keeping up with devices and social media can be challenging for parents. Even parents who are up on social media might be surprised about what aps are now available and what kids can be exposed to.

VUSD Evaluating School Start Times

sleeping.jpg

Children 5-11 years naturally wake early. Teens 12-18 years naturally wake later, despite bed times.

Researchers have studied the effect of delaying start times for high school students and have found that even a modest shift in start times benefits adolescent students.

Teen experience a biological shift in their internal clocks that causes them to be alert at typical bedtimes and to have difficulty waking early in the morning. Because they are drowsy in the morning, teens have more trouble:

  • being alert in school
  • paying attention
  • solving problems
  • coping with stress
  • retaining information.

In hopes of creating the best learning environment possible for our students, VUSD is evaluating the start times for each school.

How would you be affected by a change in school start times?

Please take 10 minutes to consider the aspects of school start time changes and tell us what you think. Info and survey at http://www.vacavilleusd.org/times

Parents Can File Objection to Mandated Release of Student Data

INFORMATION REGARDING CONFIDENTIAL STUDENT DATA

A recent lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) is impacting all school districts across the state, including the Solano SELPA, of which Vacaville Unified is a member district.

In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association, filed a lawsuit against the CDE alleging widespread, systemic non-compliance by local education agencies with special education laws. The suit also alleges the CDE fails to monitor, investigate and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law. The CDE denies these allegations and is actively defending the litigation.

The Solano County Office of Education and our local school districts are not involved in the lawsuit and are not the subject of any of the suit’s allegations.

Nonetheless, as a part of this lawsuit, CDE has been ordered by the court to release all data it has collected on general and special education students since Jan. 1, 2008.

For more information regarding the release of this data and how you can file an objection with the court to consider not releasing your data, visit:  http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase. You may also contact the California Department of Education at 916-319-0800.

New School Immunization Requirements

While the Vacaville Unified School District values the personal beliefs and perspectives of our District families, new legislation now prevents VUSD from accepting waivers pertaining to vaccinations. The new legislation (SB 277) states that, as of January 1, 2016, personal belief exemptions for state-mandated immunizations will no longer be accepted when registering students for school in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and for the Tdap requirement for 7th grade. Parents who choose not to immunize their student have the option of home schooling or an independent study program.  More information about SB 277 is available at shotsforschool.org.

PARENT INPUT REQUESTED FOR LCFF AND LCAP FUNDING

LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA (LCFF) AND THE LOCAL CONTROL ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN (LCAP)

It is an exciting time in education, particularly in the Vacaville Unified School District. As you are aware, the state implemented a new method of funding public schools called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCFF has been passed by legislation to provide a more equitable, rational and efficient approach to allocating resources to all School Districts. This formula is structured to do what the name implies – allow local insight and meaningful conversations from parents, employees, and the community of their schools.

Another new component to this process is the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). To ensure that the funding is targeted at the needs of all students in VUSD, as well as the identified subgroups of English Learners, Low Income, and Foster Youth, the District will begin the process of developing a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

As an involved partner with our district, I invite you to share your input and perspective based on the following Eight Priorities established by the California Department of Education for the LCAP, and also provide suggestions you feel will assist us in providing an optimum learning environment for students in the Vacaville Unified School District. Your input into this survey will be taken into consideration while developing the school district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP):

Bicycle donation day set for April 20

The VUSD Nutrition Department is once again collecting donated bicycles to give away during their summer feeding program.

Last year more than 400 kids requested the free bikes, but we only had about 100 to give. You can help by donating any unwanted bikes. Collection stations will be set up in the parking lots of Vaca High and Will C. Wood high schools from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.

Crews at the California Medical Facility fix the bikes up before they are sent out, and other local organizations volunteer in the effort. Donations are tax deductible, and forms will be available at the drop-off sites.

For more information, see the attached flyer.

Early Assessment Program for Juniors

Soon, students will take the California Standards Tests (CSTs) in several subjects.  Juniors taking the English, Algebra 2 and Summative High School Math tests will see a brief set of optional multiple-choice questions that are part of the Early Assessment Program (EAP).

The EAP lets juniors know if they are ready for college-level coursework in English and math, giving them the opportunity to improve during senior year. To participate, students should simply answer the optional EAP questions, and bubble in the area indicating that EAP results can be released to CSU, Community Colleges, or both.

For more information, see the attached letter from the Cal. Dept. of Education, which includes links to the EAP and CSU web sites.

Full 180-day school year restored for 2011-12

Through a negotiated settlement with the Vacaville Teachers Union, we have reinstated three (3) instructional days to the 2011.12 school year calendar.  The three (3) furlough days were previously scheduled in May.  This collaborated decision supports the Vacaville Unified students by eliminating any loss of instructional time for the 2011.12 school year.

Tdap extension granted in new law

Under a new state law, SB 614, students in the 7th through 12th grades will be given an extra 30 days to show proof of the whooping cough booster (Tdap) shot. Originally, students entering middle or high school needed to show proof of the shot prior to the first day of school. With the passage of the new law students now may conditionally attend classes for up to 30 calendar days after their first day of the 2011-2012 school year before meeting their requirement for the booster.

Students will face exclusion from classes if they have not met the vaccine requirement by their school’s deadline.

For more information on the booster shot see the text box on the home page of our web site, or see the files posted on the district site.

Just testing to see if the RSS feed-to mailer is working for Country High. There are also RSS feeds for WCW, VHS, Buckingham, and Vaca Pena. None for Jepson, unfortunately, since they still don't use a School Loop web site. Each should appear in a separate mailer on days when something is posted to the web site.

Immunization requirement for grades 7-12 next year

To help protect your children and others from whooping cough, a new California law now requires students to be vaccinated against whooping cough.

For the 2011-12 school year all students entering grades 7-12 will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (Tdap) before starting school. In future school years, students in grade 7 will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (Tdap) before starting school.

Students who do not show proof of receiving a Tdap booster shot after the age of 7 will not be able to start school until proof is provided to the school. The tetanus-diphtheria booster shot, Td, will not meet the requirement.

Attend and Achieve through December

The Vacaville Unified School District wants to remind all families that school achievement begins with attendance. With perfect attendance in a month, students can also earn a chance to win a Visa gift card from the district's Attend and Achieve program.

According to Angela Higdon, the program's coordinator, California schools receive the majority of their funding from attendance. "By increasing the attendance rate, VUSD receives more money for our children," Higdon stated.

"Healthy students are encouraged to attend every class, every day, on time. If family vacation plans will have your child out of school for more than 5 days, please consider signing up for Independent Study," said Higdon. Applications are available in the school's front office.

Prep-2-Loop: Race Day Tips

The district Wellness Committee and VPEF is encouraging all families to start prepping for the 7th annual Loop the Lagoon, coming up May 1 at Lagoon Valley. Each week we will post general training tips to make this year's run more fun.

This week: Race Day Tips

 1- Number Pick Up
If at all possible pick up your child's number and goodie bag the night before the race.  This will make your morning much smoother on race day and help the volunteer crew as well.  Be sure to thank the volunteers, they have put aside time to make this event happen.

2- Wardrobe Check
The night before lay out your child’s clothes you plan for them to wear for the race.  Pin the number on the front of your child’s shirt and attach chip to your shoe (if chip timed).  Include all clothes that you plan for your child to wear before, during, and after the event.  Be sure to remember sunscreen as well if it looks like a sunny day.

3- Hit The Sack EARLY!
Your child needs to be rested for race day, so be sure to get your child to bed on time.  He/she may have difficulty sleeping the night before, so be sure to get a good night’s sleep 2 days before the race as well.

4- Eat Breakfast
Before you go to the race, you want your child to have a small breakfast.  Have the same foods you have given before morning runs.  Give 2 hours for the food to digest before the beginning of the run.

5- Arrive Early
For most races, you will need 45 minutes to get parked and situated. If you are not able to pick up your packet the night before give yourself an hour because that will take extra time. Make sure you know how to get to the race start, often streets will be closed for the race so you may need to use alternate routes.  You may want to have a map or directions laid out near your race bag and car keys.

6- Get In Line
With race day nerves swelling, your child may feel the need to go to the bathroom.  Get in line 30 minutes before the start to insure you are able to get relief and still make to the start on time.  Most races will have a long line of “Porta-Potties”- they are usually stocked well with toilet paper, but you may consider to bring some just in case!!

7- Start Line Etiquette
There are many runners with many different paces running this race.  Generally speaking the start chute should begin with the fastest runners and finish with those taking it slower.  Find your child’s place in the group and error on the side of slower- this will make the start far less stressful.

8- Enjoy Your Run
Remind your child that this is what they have been training for- enjoy!!  Have them be aware of people around them during the water stations. Discuss not to slow down, or start walking, directly in front of someone else who is going faster.

9- Finish Line Smile
Some of the best pictures at a race are those coming through the finish chute.  Tell your child to smile!  Once they are done, they will take a tag off of the race number and/or cut your chip off of your child’s shoe. Have your child continue walking to cool their muscles down and grab a bottle of water if possible.

10-Congratulate their Accomplishment
They did it!  Your child committed to run this race and now he/she is a finisher.  Let them know you are proud!!  Try to have your child eat within 30-60 minutes of finishing the race.  Now go home and relax- maybe look for another fun run in your  families future…

Prep-2-Loop: Running Form

The district Wellness Committee and VPEF are encouraging all families to start prepping for the 7th annual Loop the Lagoon coming up May 1 at Lagoon Valley. Each week we will post general training tips to make this year's run more fun.

This week: Running Form

Proper running form should start from your head and finish at your toes. The goal of good form is to minimize the energy you expend and lessen the chance for injury.  Although there is no one single “perfect” running gait, use the following as guidelines for proper running form:

Head: Keep your head slightly tilted down, looking at the ground in front of you, 10 to 15 feet ahead. Your facial muscles, jaw and neck should be relaxed.  Enjoy your run!

Shoulders: Keep your shoulders relaxed and do not allow them to “slouch” forward.   Hunching over will restrict the breathing passage, allowing less oxygen to get to your working muscles.

Arms: Arms should be bent at a 90-degree angle and relaxed. As you run, swing your arms forward, try not to swing them across your chest. Brush your hands past your waistband on the downswing, bringing them back behind your body. The arm movement should move in conjunction with your legs.  Run with your legs, and let your arms go along for the ride!

Hands: Your thumbs and index finger should gently touch with your hand cupped, as though you are holding a potato chip that you don’t want to break. Clenching your hands is taking excessive energy away from your legs and undue stress to your upper body. Again, don’t let your hands cross over the middle of your chest- remember arms move forward for forward motion.

Torso: You want to keep your torso erect as if you are a puppet hanging on a string from above.   This will allow your chest cavity to be open, which will allow easier breathing.

Hips: The hips should be facing forward, with no rotation.  Your foot should strike with a heel to toe motion, directly under your hips.

Feet: Try to keep your feet low to the ground and touch the surface as light as possible. The lighter your feet touch the less pounding your body will incur (especially your joints.) Visualize yourself as if you are “running on eggshells”- this will help you stay light on your feet.

Try to change only one thing at a time and only for a brief period.  To make your new effort a habit, practice will make perfect.

Prep-2-Loop: Warm up Drills

The district Wellness Committee and VPEF is encouraging all families to start prepping for the 7th annual Loop the Lagoon, coming up May 1 at Lagoon Valley. Each week we will post general training tips to make this year's run more fun.

This week: Warm up Drills

The goal of the warm up is to get the body ready for exercise by increasing the heart rate and preparing the muscles for work. Warm-ups are dynamic stretches such as jumping jacks and running in place. Warm-ups take 5 minutes and should be done after a 2 - 5 minute walk.

Reach for the Stars (lateral stretch)
Stand facing forward with feet hips width apart with slight bend in the knees. Lift one arm overhead towards opposite side as if reaching for a star on tiptoes. Alternate sides, repeating 5-10 times each side.

Volcano
Stand facing forward with feet hips width apart with slight bend in the knees. Place hands in prayer position at heart. Slowly squat down as if sitting in a chair and then release arms overhead in front of you like an exploding volcano. Kids love to make the sound of the volcano. Do 5-10 times.

Rock climbing
Starting in a push up or plank position alternate the feet in a hopping pattern as if climbing. Do 5-10 times.

Jumping Jacks
Think of your own variations. Do 5-10 times.

Rag doll
Stand facing forward with feet hips width apart with slight bend in the knees. Swing arms loosely like a rag doll while rotating trunk from side to side. Do 10-20 times.

Swine Flu Info on BrainPop

BrainPOP, the district's provider of animated curriculum-based content, is providing a free "movie" to help explain swine flu. Though BrainPop is a subscription service, they are giving free access to this movie to help students, teachers, and parents talk about the facts and clear up any misconceptions they may have. Kids may have a lot of questions, and engaging them in a conversation can help lessen their anxiety.

The link to the movie is below. As with all of their movies there is a related quiz and other activities to view after watching the movie. For younger students they have provided a free movie on handwashing from BrainPop Jr.

If you have any questions about BrainPop contact VUSD Technology Coordinator Jim Wasielewski at JimW@Vacavilleusd.org

VPEF Halloween Ball
When was the last time you dressed up for Halloween? Anyone who secretly wishes they could pretend to be firefighter, zombie, werewolf or nurse for a night will have their chance at the 4th Annual VPEF Halloween Ball.
Costumes are required for entrance to this sellout event that raises money for the Vacaville Public Education Foundation (VPEF). This year, the best-costumed participants can even win prizes for their clever get-ups.
Costumes will be judged in seven categories: Funniest, Scariest, Best Couple, Best Group, Most Original, Sexiest and Best Overall Costume. Winners in each category will receive the 1st Annual Skelly Award, donated by Pixel Rhythms. Other prizes are also being donated by such local merchants as Ryan Bates Photography, Merchant Main, STARS, and more.
Contestants need to be at the Halloween Ball by 9 p.m. to be eligible for inclusion in the contest. Judges will be circulating throughout the Ball that night, and they will invite the best to join them on stage. The audience will vote for winners in each category.
The Halloween Ball will be held on Saturday, October 24, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Copart Hangar at the Nut Tree Airport.
The price of admission for those 21 and over is $60 for VPEF members and $75 for non-members, and includes dinner, dancing to the music of GrayDaze and a DJ, a Haunted House and a no-host bar. VIP tables are also available.

Art Department News!

We are off to a great start in Art.  We are studying beginning drawing with emphasis on the human face.  Due to budget constraints we are in need of art supplies.  Students will be given extra points for bringing in needed art supplies.  We need to much. Some items we ALWAYS need are:  pencils, hand held pencil sharpeners, smaller sized paint brushes, acrylic paints, etc.  Walmart is an excellent cource for all of the above mentioned.  If you have leftover art supplies from a personal art project, please feel free to donate!
